What We Believe

Newtown Mission seeks to be: an open community committed to passionate worship of Jesus Christ, with sound biblical teaching and the transformation of lives through outreach, discipleship and compassionate care, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The heartbeat of Newtown Mission is worship, which is creative, relevant and empowered by the Holy Spirit. We expect to experience the presence of God in worship and this influences all our mission activities.

We live in a post-denominational era. This means that Newtown Mission has people from a diversity of backgrounds and relates to a variety of churches with which we share common values. Our heritage is Methodist and we are a congregation of the Uniting Church in Australia.

Our Values

1. Our Foundation is the Word of God.

We value the Scriptures as the authoritative Word of God, where we meet Jesus, the Living
Word. The Scripture is the definitive revelation of God, where we find His guidance as to how
we should live and where we test the manifestations of the Holy Spirit, who makes the living
Word real to us.

2. We value worship.

Worship is intimacy with God our Father, made possible through Jesus' death and the Holy
Spirit who brings us into communion with Him. Worship is to love God with all our heart, soul
and strength, through praise and adoration, through obedience to His Word and through
serving Him with our whole lives.

3. We value prayer.

Prayer, the vital force of our faith, is the communication of the child with the Heavenly Father,
the disciple with the master, and the Church her Lord. Prayer asks God, seeks understanding of
His will, listens, responds, & utterly depends on Him in all things. It is to live in communion
with God as Jesus did.

4. We value the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God's gift to the Church to make known His love for the world through Jesus
death. This gospel can only be believed and His Kingdom seen as the Holy Spirit reveals it. Thus
we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit to boldly give witness and to exercise His spiritual gifts
to build up one another.

5. We value fellowship.

Fellowship is obeying Jesus’ command to love one another. It is to celebrate the unity we have
in being saved by the one Lord, filled by the one Spirit and equally loved by our one Father. It is
to enjoy our communion with God, to grow in communion with each other and serve Him and
each other, together.

6. We value evangelism.

Evangelism is to obey Jesus’ commission to go into all the world to make disciples. It is to
respond to God’s love in our hearts, compelling us to proclaim Jesus death and resurrection,
and the free gift of eternal life. It is to make a friend, be a friend and be used by God to bring
that friend to their place in God’s kingdom. Evangelism is not to condemn those in the world
but to proclaim and demonstrate God’s love to them that they might believe.

7. We value compassion.

God’s mercy is lavish, patient and gentle, reaching to all. Having been saved by His mercy we
reach out to others with His same unconditional love. Because God’s mercy is beyond our
understanding and scope we seek to be filled with His compassion so that we can love mercy,
do justly and glorify God.

8. We value making disciples.

Discipleship is to obey Jesus, make disciples, baptise them & teach them all that he commanded.
It’s to reproduce His character in us so that his passion to reach the whole world is fulfilled. It is
to be equipped with a knowledge of God, His word and the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that we
can love mercy, do justly and glorify God.

9. We value sending.

Just as the Father sent Jesus, so He has sent us into the world. God has prepared good works
for each to do. He sends us to do them across the street, across the city, the nation or the
world. We are sent to preach the gospel, to extend His kingdom, and to do works that bring
justice and righteousness.

10. We value the unity of the Church.

Jesus prayed that we would all be one, just as He and the Father are one. We believe that
God’s purpose at this time is to bring about a manifest unity of His church. We are committed
to the post denominational church, held together through truth, trust and relationship in the
Holy Spirit.
