Every day at Newtown Mission’s Jordan Café, people walk through the doors carrying more than hunger.
Some carry loneliness.
Some carry grief.
Some carry fear about rising rent, empty cupboards, or another night spent alone.
And some are simply looking for a place where somebody notices them.
*Charlie first came to Newtown Mission almost ten years ago. Originally from India, he came to Australia in 1984 with his family, but over time, those relationships were lost. These days, he lives alone in a granny flat.
He says that when he first visited Newtown Mission, things were quieter. But over the last few years, something changed.
“It became a real community,” he says.
“Staff and volunteers care for people, and that made me feel welcome.”
Now he comes every Wednesday and Friday for lunch at the Jordan Café. He talks with people, shares a smile, and spends time somewhere he feels safe and accepted.
“It gives me something to look forward to,” he says.
After undergoing triple bypass surgery, Charlie must carefully manage his health. He appreciates the fresh meals served at the café, especially the salads and even walks from Sydenham Station to Newtown Mission to keep active and connected.
But what matters most is not only the food.
“It feels like I found my family here,” he says.
“People listen. They care.”
Then there is Connor.
Connor has been part of the Newtown Mission community for decades. He first came through the doors during a difficult period in his life and found more than a meal.
"I kept coming back because it felt different," he says. "People knew your name. They cared how you were going."
Over the years, Connor became a volunteer, giving back to the community that supported him. What keeps him coming back is the sense of belonging.
"There's really no difference between the people serving and the people being served," he says. "We all need help at different times in our lives."
For Connor, the Jordan Café is more than a place to eat. It is a place of friendship, purpose, and community.
"Family is exactly what this place feels like," he says. "Nobody is better than anyone else. We all need support sometimes."
For people like Connor, Newtown Mission is not just a service. It is a place where people are welcomed, valued, and reminded that they belong.
Every single week, the Jordan Café serves up to 400 meals to people doing it tough in our community. Alongside meals, Newtown Mission distributes pantry staples, emergency food support, warm clothing, and practical care to hundreds of people experiencing hardship.
For many, this is not just a café.
It is a lifeline.
It is a safe place in the middle of busy Newtown where everybody is welcome, regardless of background, beliefs, culture, or circumstance.
And right now, we urgently need your help to keep those doors open.
As the cost-of-living rises, more people are turning to Newtown Mission for support than ever before. More meals are needed. More emergency relief is needed. More people are arriving feeling isolated, exhausted, and unsure where else to turn.
Your donation today can help provide:
Fresh, healthy meals for people experiencing hardship
Pantry staples and emergency food relief
Warm clothing during winter
Compassionate staff and volunteers who walk alongside people in crisis
A safe and welcoming place where nobody feels alone
For people like Charlie and Connor, places like the Jordan Café can mean the difference between isolation and connection, despair and hope.
Please consider making a generous tax-deductible donation before June 30.
Your support will help ensure that someone walking through our doors tomorrow will find a warm meal, a caring conversation, and the reminder that they matter.
