My name is Sally
I’ve been shaped by a loving family, wonderful church communities, tough life experiences, good mentors, and wise Christian people speaking into my life
Newtown Mission is a place I love to be and be part of. Each time I see the towering spire against the blue sky, my spirits rise. For me, the Mission is friendship, shared spiritual understanding, inclusivity and diversity. It’s where the ground feels more level. It reminds me I’m not alone - Jesus is my anchor, the source of my direction and peace.
Most weeks I hear something in the sermon that helps and guides me, and the music is fabulous. But the conversations are next level - people from all different places sharing the ups and downs of ordinary, yet extraordinary, lives. One conversation I’ll never forget was in the Jordan Café kitchen with Sini. It was late on a Thursday when someone came asking for food. I was ready to send them away, but Sini said gently, ‘Tell them we’ll have a meal ready in a few minutes.’ She served them with such warmth, her face shining. The person left so happy, and I could tell they felt seen and loved. That moment changed me forever.
I’m more of a behind-the-scenes person, so I serve through hospitality, welcoming, setting up the free shop at the Jordan Café, and using my work skills to support the church. But I’ve also felt deeply supported here. When my elderly parents moved to Sydney, the Mission community embraced them with such practical care - it was generous and very moving for me.
I love the vision and reach of Newtown Mission. It feels like a beacon of light in the middle of busy, bustling Newtown - noticing and caring for people on the margins, inviting and welcoming all, walking with each other, encouraging creativity, enabling healing, and sharing the hope and peace found in Jesus.
